Oil Guru Matt Simmons Says BP Relief Wells WILL FAIL, Undersea Oil Covers 40% Of Gulf, BP Will Go Bankrupt, & Our Choice Is A 24-Year Leak Vs. The Nuclear Option

Apologies for the never-ending headline, but Matthew Simmons brought a lot to the table in this 5-minute, Bloomberg clip from earlier this afternoon.  If you've been following Simmons, you know he has been right since day one of the spill.

The relief wells will fail because there is no reliable well casing.  Do not immediately discount the nuclear option.  Simmons is confident we'll learn in August that we really don't have any other choice.

If the well is fractured in multiple spots below the seabed, as is being reported by a variety of sources, then BP's Fantasy Cap is merely for show.  Meanwhile , the official daily spill estimate has been raised again.  Simmons says it's much higher -- closer to 100,000 barrels per day.

And did I mention the undersea oil lake that now covers 40% of the Gulf of Mexico.

remarkable on every level.

that we're here. that there is almost no end game in sight. that a solution may exist, but because the mere word "nuclear" raises such emotion that we may not consider it.

let's stop worrying about offending sensibilities. or at least stop convincing ourselves we've made things better by "changing the tone" of discourse.

fix the effing problem...

Empire in crisis

From the BP-Deepwater Horizon catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico, crashing stock markets, and the bloody consequences of manufactured wars, it clear that the empire has lost control of its own criminal system.

As Michael C. Ruppert wrote in his 2004 book Crossing the Rubicon:

There are many factors that the rulers of the American empire now have to manage as they read their own delusional map of the world. They have to:

Apportion dwindling resources among competitors, some of whom possess nuclear weapons;
Maintain and expand their control over enough of the oil and gas remaining to ensure their global dominance and maintain order among the citizens of the Empire;
Simultaneously manage a global economic system, made possible by hydrocarbon energy that is collapsing and in which the growing population is demanding more things that can only be supplied by using still more hydrocarbon energy;
Acknowledge that they cannot save their own economy without selling more of these products;
Control the exploding demand for oil and gas through engineered recessions and wars that break national economies;
Hide the evidence that they are systematically looting the wealth of all the people on the planet—even their own people—in order to maintain control;
Maintain a secret revenue system to provide enough off-the-books capital for military advantage; improving their technological posture, and funding covert operations;
Repress any dissent and head off any exposure to their actions;
Convince the population that they are honorable;
Kill off enough of the population so that they can maintain control after oil supplies have dwindled to the point of energy starvation.”
Never has this agenda, its tragic consequences and ultimate futility, been more obvious than with the unprecedented events of the past weeks.

BP-Deepwater Horizon: an “extinction event”
Jun 16, 2010 at 1:25 PM | Unregistered CommenterKen
If this thing blew, it could be like the Yellowstone Caldera, except from below a mile of sea, with a 1/4-mile opening, with up to 150,000 psi of oil and natural gas behind it.

“That would be an extinction event.”

Leaked memos suggests that government officials were aware of a potential for a nightmare scenario. Will it simply be “allowed to happen” as the days, weeks and months pass?

BP, Halliburton and Transocean — notorious icons of “disaster capitalism” — enjoy long and enduring ties to the world governments, and their worldwide oil strategies.

Both the Bush-Cheney and Obama administrations, the Minerals Management Service (MMS) directly involved with allowing BP to operate Deepwater Horizon in reckless fashion, sheltering BP from regulatory requirements. This despite the fact that BP has ahistory of recklessness and disaster known throughout the energy industry.

The case implicates Dick Cheney and the National Energy Policy Development Group (NEPDG), Cheney’s secret “energy task force,” which may have provided BP and other oil giants with the license to “fast track” into production without proper safeguards, and without proper regard to potential catastrophic spills or permanent environmental damage.

What, if any, punishment will BP face for turning the entire Gulf of Mexico into a dead zone; for threatening all of humanity? A series of useless hearings in which corrupt and feckless members of Congress help the directors of BP, Halliburton and Transocean maintain their innocence, conceding “mistakes”? Fines? Promises that “it will never happen again” while an apocalypse is happening?

Transocean has in fact, already profited from the disaster. The corporation was just paid $401 million in insurance, while petitioning to cap its liability for the disaster.

The economic cost alone can potentially bring down a world economy already teetering on the brink of collapse. Oil prices will bedisrupted for decades.

It is bitterly ironic that the Deepwater Horizon, which just weeks ago was viewed as the empire’s last greatest hope, will instead serve as its suicide.

Yet, even as the mega-volcano of toxic sludge relentlessly dwarfs more geography over the coming weeks and months, the empire’s leaders still refuse to stop.

The Obama administration has granted 27 new waivers to big oil companies since the BP explosion, allowing them to engage in yet more drilling and exploration, without proper environmental review — in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Kerry-Lieberman energy bill, pushed through Congress in recent days, establishes yet more offshore drilling around the country, along with “clean coal” (a fraud and myth, perpetrated by the coal industry, that Congress and the Obama administration continue to push).

Ken's posts speak SO MANY TRUTHS, it baffles the mind. So do DB's posts of course. And I know people read them, yet it remains a fucking MYSTERY to me why no Federal or state prosecutor's have started LOOKING INTO these crimes.

Actually, I actually ALREADY KNOW the answer to my own question; the fraud and incompetence in the U.S. government has become thoroughly INSTITUTIONALIZED and relevant law-enforcement offices are PURPOSELY under-staffed, under-funded and side-tracked on irrelevant minor criminal BULLSHIT.

This nation is DONE, go ahead ..stick a FORK IN IT!

Greetings, there is a viable and economical way to plug the leak in the gulf. It is similar to balloon angioplasty, but on an industrial scale with a bit of tweeking but it will work IF THEY DO IT!!!! don't hold your breath though folks, I've been emailing news organizations, congress the senate and the white house along with bp telling them about this solution. It's like screaming into a hurricane though, no one can hear me and everyone is so busy with talking points and trying to gain some political ground, no one really wants the leak plugged. Obama is busy working on getting cap and trade passed and WILL use this oil leak as his pulpit to get it passed and congress is busy feathering their own nests.
Anyway, to plug the leak, as I stated earlier it is similar to balloon angioplasty, if you are unfamiliar with what that is, search youtube, they have video.. The tweeking is the balloon will have to be inside the thread feeder, when in place deep inside the leak, deploy the balloon and fill with some proprietary concrete/cement mixture, let it setup and LEAK FIXED.
So simple even an elected official could comprehend it.. tell your friends, loved one's and anyone else that you know about this fix and lets get the leak plugged and move on with our lives. Have a nice day,... OH and for the people who will inevitably scoff that such an easy idea will work, could it really hurt to try? because to date, they've not done a whole lot with the leak so why not try balloon angioplasty on the leak.

"Greetings, there is a viable and economical way to plug the leak in the gulf...."

I'll certainly grant you this much: YOUR plan sounds one WAY helluva lot better and more scientific than some of the other STUPID CRAP these imbeciles have tried to now.

Anyway, even if your good idea DID get thru it would result useless, mainly because sometimes it almost seems as if Obama secretly WANTS this leak to continue...

"Our Choice Is A 24-Year Leak Vs. The Nuclear Option"

Considering the fact that the last 3 years have been the financial version of the BP oil leak; is there any chance somebody could NUKE THE FED?

All the information I have to date I believe justifies a warning be issued to everyone in the Gulf of Mexico (within 100 miles of Gulf of Mexico) to get out as soon as possible. The two major threats are 2 types of toxic gas clouds (created by corexit chemical dispersant and hydrogen sulfide) and the real potential for a methane caused tsunami (this would be a double tsunami) killing all people and boats in the Gulf waters instantly then 2 tsunamis that would race across the gulf at 400mph.

BP called in Russian expert Anatoly Sagalevich, holder of the world's record
for the deepest freshwater dive and his expertise with Russia's two Deep Submergence Vehicles
MIR I, MIR 2 which are able to take their crews to the depth of 6,000 meters (19,685 feet).
BP called in the Russian expert Anatoly Sagalevich on April 22nd (2 days after spill). According
to Sagalevich's report, the oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico is not just coming from the 22
inch well bore site being shown on TV but from at least 18 other sites on the fractured sea floor
with the largest being nearly 11 kilometers (7 miles) from where the Deepwater Horizon sank.
Futher Anatoly Sagalevich of Russia's Shirshov Institution of Oceanology in a report prepared
for Prime Minister Putin warns that the Gulf of Mexico sea floor has been fractured
"beyond all repair" and our world should begin preparing for an ecological disaster "beyond
comprehension" unless "extraordinary measures" are undertaken to stop the massive flow of oil
into our planet's 11th body of water. Russia has recommended using a nuclear device /weapon to seal the massive oil leak. Anatoly Sagalevich stated that the Obama administration is refusing to use nuclear weapons to plug the leak and America's main concern is not the environmental catastrophe this disaster is causing but rather what impact of using a nuclear weapon to stop this leak would have on the continued production of oil from the Gulf of Mexico.

What is the risk of the nuclear explosion then?
Could this trigger an even worse scenario like oil spewing into the ocean uncontrollable forever, or at this tectonic plates an earth quake will be triggered...etc?? Something like an Oil Volcanoe??
It points more and more to me that a third of the world's ocean will die like it is said in Revelations.
Another big disaster that is following now, is also the Sun which they believe will put earth into another mini-ice age for at least 60 years!! What next?????
I am not paranoid nor a prophet of doom, but can see things coming and yes, hard times coming for us on earth!!

The balloon angioplasty solution sounds intriguing, but is still problematic. First, what type of material could be employed to create the balloon? Second, could it withstand the pressure level coming from the oil flow? Third, do we have the ability/technology to inflate it given the amount of the flow pressure?

It sounds a bit like trying to stop the flow of a fire hose with a t-shirt. The apparatus is likely to be destroyed before it can be deployed. It is easy inside a blood vessel, but the pressure there isn't anything like that of this well blowout.
