Niall Ferguson: Coming Debt Crisis Means It's Now Or Never For The American Empire (WATCH)

Video:  Niall Ferguson on the American Empire -- May 14, 2010

Harvard Historian Niall Ferguson on China, pre-WWI Germany, and the coming U.S. Debt Crisis.  Solid clip, brief and to the point.

The same points we've been making since the day we've launched.  Accumulated government debt and new trillion-dollar annual deficits will bring a sovereign debt crisis to the U.S. much sooner than most think.  Don't look now, but we're about to cross over the $13 trillion mark in total national debt.  Just 8 months ago we crossed $12 trillion.  The Deficit President (the Obankster) could care less.  Oh sure, he admitted that we're broke LIVE on C-Span, appointed a deficit commission headed by Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson, but he has no plan.  For the Deficit President, it's all politics.  And his only hope at victory is to borrow, spend, extend and pretend his way into 2012, the fiscal future of this country be damned.

One can't help but wonder what Fergie's opinion of Teh Debt was back in January of 2001, when Mr. Greenspan (and other wankers) lectured us that paying down the debt too fast was extremely risky. Really (from a nyt piece at the time: "the government will soon confront the welcome but tricky question of what to do with surplus revenue when the debt is zero"). I know what ol' Niall's thoughts on American Imperialism were just a few years later: utterly disastrous. So I wonder if he scolded us Yanks for paying off the debt too fast in the early Double Aughts as so many other Very Serious Thinkers of that time did. Wankers.

(Yglesias and Balloon Juice noted this today.)

America must fall for their masters true plans to succeed, and all politicians will choose never for the future of America if the checks are big enough that theirs will be taken care of while the rest of us starve or worse...

"Coming Debt Crisis Means It's Now Or Never For The American Empire"

I like the way the American media is always hyping the debt crisis "to COME". As if most informed people hadn't realized that we're already SMACK DAB in the midst of it ALREADY.

"maybe, but he focuses attention on debts & deficits...which is what matters..."

EXACTLY. People need to be willing to set aside their SECONDARY pet peeves & issues in order to focus instead on bringing back some semblance of taxpayer control over the outright LOOTING of our national economy. And for THAT we need to focus on re-vamping our entire financial system. The operative word here being : FOCUS!
