I hadn't seen that one D.B. He's right on all points as far as I'm concerned.

After studying prehistoric legends and recorded history for most of my life. I have come to believe religion was invented by small self-interested elite groups. To control and manipulate as much of the population at that particular time in history that they could sell their particular version of paradise to. This allowed the small groups the power to extort wealth, labor, property and even life from the masses by promising life ever after. The people swayed by these religions would endure severe tragic hardships in life believing they would be rewarded for their sacrifice in the hereafter. I find it amazing today that large groups of people believe what are essentially old legends as real fact. They support religions, such as the Christian, and Muslim religions that in pursuit of wealth, power, and converts have caused unbelievable human suffering for well over a thousand years. And the Jewish religion for even longer. I don't believe things that are being written yesterday and today and claimed as true fact by those in power, yet a large segment of the human population believes things written over a thousand years are absolute fact. If you can convince the sheeple that Gods on your side you can do anything you want to them and they keep coming back for more.

Sagebrush And what is in it for you? If weak cry for help, from whom, you? If poor in spirit, seek comfort, from whom, you? I mistrust the all-knowing self righteous in their eagerness to disparage those believed to be beneath them, such as you. Thank god you find little of significance outside yourself. For outside is only the harmless emptyness of your mind.

Lynn...i think religion should be personal...and i understand your reaction...but read sage's comment again...there's a lot of truth there...and i would imagine that sage views church and religion separately...churches are full of wonderful people doing wonderful, charitable things for others...most local churches are of this type...

Religion is a different matter altogether...and he was talking about how religion has been used throughout history to kill and subjugate millions...and i hope people understand that regarding my own religious views...i think local churches for the most part are awesome institutions that do great work, provide a social fabric, and much more...it's the use of religion to kill and fight wars that i have a problem with...so naturally i'm no fan of the how the vatican and catholic church helped nazi criminals escape prosecution after ww ii by secretly sending them to latin america...often argentina...that's ust one example...

I agree with D.B. most of my family and a lot of my friends church goers all are truly great people. I have lived in a small mountain town for 45 years. I have high regard and respect for my neighbors and other members of the community and would never even think of criticizing them or their religions. I would never put myself above someone because they believe in God. This country was founded with freedom of religion a basic right. Each person has the right to believe as they choose and I support that right.

I find almost everything of significance outside myself, I have spent a large part of my life outdoors. While I may believe in evolution over creation I still take great pleasure at the wonders of nature. I have helped those in need when I could and comforted many in my lifetime and will do more if I can. I have lived most of my life by the Golden Rule and will continue doing so till the day I die. And I can assure you my mind is neither empty nor harmless.

My comment refers to the fact that religion has been used by self-serving groups of sometimes quite evil people down through history to as D.B. stated "subjugate millions" I am quite sure there were also people involved in those religions who were trying to do good. History has the evil ones leaving millions of corpses on every continent except Antarctica in the name of whatever religion they were using as an excuse to have power over those they conquered.

Could be basic human nature. Who knows? I sure as hell don't and I don't know anybody that does.

Sagebrush speaks Wisely but may I propose that both Evolution and Creation are one & the same and are still going on right before your very eyes.. Your-our trouble is in visually seeing the transition from one to the other since our time on Earth to see this slow transition is a mere 70-80 years.. The Six-Day Bible version hangs the Christian every time when the "Day" is one of earths' revolvements.. "Days" is meant to be Epochs within un-ending Time.. The Creation is continuious in the sense that all possiblties cannot exist at the same time on a limited Earth, so Evolution exists to phase in the Creations of all possibilities across the Life Spectrum of a limited Earth..
Creation and Evolution are one and the Same over an un-ending Time..
May I suggest that ALL of us little earthlings EXPAND our thought and reasonings to include both creations & evolutions..
The Spirit Force that exists to give Life to the Dust of Earth may never be understood by little ol' you or little ol' me from inside the bubble of Creation.. 70-80 years of Life with your eyes wide open and a sensitive self and Area awareness will begin to reveal both these Realities to the discerning Mind..
