If I had come here from a distant world and saw what was happening in America, I would be baffled by the the fact that those called liberals could be almost blindly pushing those who are called conservatives into a defensive corner and seemingly ignoring the latters potential for a strong backlash that could result in an end to the present civilization. Both sides consider the other selfish and delusional, and neither side is willing to compromise or even find enough commonality to declare a detente. One side vaunts it's intellect, the other it's work ethic, one a collective mass of singular mind, the other a an aggregate of individual liberties. And I think I would probably decide to just go away before the approaching flashpoint happened.

Carlin is correct. In the 1940s and 50s, for example, there were dozens of newspapers representing the full political spectrum, all separately owned. In the 1950s, as another example, there were dozen of alcohol manufacturers who really produced different products, not one or two or so monster companies, as there are today. The same can be said for all industries after the era of "consolidation," which is just another word for mergerism gone wild. In fact, the trend began around the beginning of the 20th century, when individuals who worked for themselves began to disappear rapidly from the American landscape. We are all consumers, who give our dollars to, or servants, who give our labor to the "ownership class," as Carlin claimed. It is most ironic, though, we just sit back and let it happen.
