In my group of friends with who I like to hang with is a fair smattering of .gov types and private industry types. My friends who work in .gov are, for the most part. gainfully employed. The friends that I know who own their own business or who work in the private sector are suffering.
Private sector jobs are declining for the most part and indeed, my very good friend who worked for a company who packages products for consumers that many of you use was let go after 25 plus years. He has tried to make a go of it in his own business, but due to the stresses of his situation, he has suffered a stroke and is now in a bad way. Not totally incapacitated, but enough not to keep up with work.
Which brings me to where I am now. I work for a private, Thank God, contractor who is of a fairly large size for this area. He has working for him guys that I knew who had small businesses that were running fairly well until the bottom dropped out including a guy I know whose Dad had started a business back in the 60's and who lost his ass from large outfits that made their way into our county and absolutely ate his lunch on labor costs with illegal hires.
.Gov types are raking in bucks and either retire with full packages and then turn and become contract hires for the same .gov operation that they worked for or go into other .gov jobs and double dip. It's a horseshit deal on the private side for small guys.
