DEATH PROFIT: Fallen Soldiers' Families Denied Cash as Prudential, MetLife Gain

Editor's Note: We are bringing back this story in conjunction with today's news that JPMorgan is ripping off thousands of military families...

---

The package arrived at Cindy Lohman’s home in Great Mills, Maryland, just two weeks after she learned that her son, Ryan, a 24-year-old Army sergeant, had been killed by a bomb in Afghanistan. It was a thick, 9-inch-by- 12-inch envelope from Prudential Financial Inc., which handles life insurance for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Inside was a letter from Prudential about Ryan’s $400,000 policy. And there was something else, which looked like a checkbook. The letter told Lohman that the full amount of her payout would be placed in a convenient interest-bearing account, allowing her time to decide how to use the benefit.

“You can hold the money in the account for safekeeping for as long as you like,” the letter said. In tiny print, in a disclaimer that Lohman says she didn’t notice, Prudential disclosed that what it called its Alliance Account was not guaranteed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., Bloomberg Markets magazine reports in its September issue.

Lohman, 52, left the money untouched for six months after her son’s August 2008 death.

“It’s like you’re paying me off because my child was killed,” she says. “It was a consolation prize that I didn’t want.”

As time went on, she says, she tried to use one of the “checks” to buy a bed, and the salesman rejected it. That happened again this year, she says, when she went to a Target store to purchase a camera on Armed Forces Day, May 15.

‘I’m Shocked’

Lohman, a public health nurse who helps special-needs children, says she had always believed that her son’s life insurance funds were in a bank insured by the FDIC. That money -- like $28 billion in 1 million death-benefit accounts managed by insurers -- wasn’t actually sitting in a bank.

It was being held in Prudential’s general corporate account, earning investment income for the insurer. Prudential paid survivors like Lohman 1 percent interest in 2008 on their Alliance Accounts, while it earned a 4.8 percent return on its corporate funds, according to regulatory filings.

“I’m shocked,” says Lohman, breaking into tears as she learns how the Alliance Account works. “It’s a betrayal. It saddens me as an American that a company would stoop so low as to make a profit on the death of a soldier. Is there anything lower than that?”

Millions of bereaved Americans have unwittingly been placed in the same position by their insurance companies. The practice of issuing what they call “checkbooks” to survivors, instead of paying them lump sums, extends well beyond the military.

Touching Americans

In the past decade, these so-called retained-asset accounts have become standard operating procedure in an industry that touches virtually every American: There are more than 300 million active life insurance policies in the U.S., and the industry holds $4.6 trillion in assets, according to the American Council of Life Insurers.

Insurance companies tell survivors that their money is put in a secure account. Neither Prudential nor MetLife Inc., the largest life insurer in the U.S., segregates death benefits into a separate fund.

Newark, New Jersey-based Prudential, the second-largest life insurer, holds payouts in its own general account, according to regulatory filings.

New York-based MetLife has told survivors in a standard letter: “To help you through what can be a very difficult, emotional and confusing time, we created a settlement option, the Total Control Account Money Market Option. It is guaranteed by MetLife.”

Rod Blagojevich has done everything he can to convince 12 citizens he is not guilty of the massive indictment he faces.

Actually, the former governor did nothing, having withdrawn his promise to testify. But his attorney Sam Adam Jr. sent his own blood pressure through the roof the Dirksen Federal Building Tuesday as he shouted and stalked the courtroom, insisting on his client's innocence.

Well, cry me a river. I couldn't care less about these douchebags getting shafted by their own government. They should have foreseen that the people who sent them to invade & kill innocent woman & children would probably turn against THEM as well sooner or later. Live & learn. Or, in THIS case, DIE & learn..

Reamber when I posted this piece..................................
When I first started looking into this situation I received this email from someone:

In the course of our investigation into the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, we have uncovered some startling information.

What I am about to tell you will knock you out of your seats.

There is a lot more going on in the Gulf of Mexico than the oils spill.

This administration and many other entities like BP, Citi, Nalco, GM, GE, Goldman Sachs, University of Chicago, holding companies along with Dept of Defense, Billionaires and Politicians are all vested in biofuels.

What is going on in the Gulf is directly related to this new industry.

There is an Algae these companies are interested in.

From the mouth of the Mississippi river, all along the Gulf coast and spreading down to the Everglades is prime area for growing this Algae. Crist is aware of this. He's funding it.There is a couple of other prime spots too. Chesapeake is one area and the Great Lakes is another. (Funny, we already had a Great Lakes Czar and a Chesapeake Czar.) (Now we have a Gulf Czar too!)

As you know, the oil continues to flow in the Gulf.

It looks incompetent when assessing the response to the crisis. It is not incompetence. It is intentional and willfull destruction.

They are spraying dispersants that are toxic to sea life. The dispersants hold the oil below the surface. Ask yourselves why you would want that. Wouldn't it be easier to vacuum the oil if it were floating?

They are not letting foreign tankers in to help. Even the few barges Jindal got his hands on were stalled, citing they need to be inspected to see if they carried enough life vests. They did.

They even pass the buck as to who is in charge. BP says they were in charge. O says he's in charge. The Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen says he's in charge. They run us in circles to divert the real questions.

If you have noticed, most of their news conferences have very little to do with action response, instead focusing on claims processing.

This is not incompetence. It is an intentional strategy. They don't want to clean it up or even try to contain it.

What they are doing is in three steps.

First get rid of oil industry in Gulf.

Then turn Gulf into a dead zone. A dead zone is free of life or ability to sustain it. The oil, dispersants and fertilizers deplete oxygen. It kills animals and fish, also turning their remains into fertilizer.

Finally, use Gulf as a giant Algae farm. Algae grows on water surface, getting oxygen from air, not water. Fertilizers like Urea supply much needed nitrogen. The Mississippi and the other rivers that empty into Gulf also pick up fertilizers from the many farms along the way. This feeds the Algae at the mouths of these rivers.

The oil in the water won't hurt the Algae. It will only promote it's growth and burn factor.

Algae costs about $2. a Barrel to refine. This is potentially very profitable.

The down side is , there isn't enough Algae to sustain the demand. It takes a lot of Algae to produce a single barrel. That means they need a huge place to grow and multiply the supply of this Algae. Right now they don't have this enormous Algae farm location. They have the desire, the technology, the investments and companies all set up.They have even taken the steps to map out the plan.

That plan involves projects in the Great Lakes., Chesapeake Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.

This oil spill whether sabotage, negligence, accident or design is the perfect way to eliminate fossil fuels such as oil and to advance his biofuel agenda..

They will sacrifice the Gulf and all who live in or around it for this multi Trillion Dollar industry.

This also ties in with Carbon capture and exchange. You all know about the Chicago Carbon Exchange, Cap & Trade and even O's support of Kyoto, so I won't bore you with history.

Now see this....................

Producers Tap Old Wells in Search of Oil

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Oil, natural gas and water are still spewing from an abandoned well hit by a barge on a Louisiana waterway near the Gulf of Mexico.

Coast Guard Capt. John Arenstam says a wild well company is working on a plan to shut down the well, which is north of Barataria Bay and has been leaking since early Tuesday.

Authorities had already been working there to avoid contamination from the much larger BP oil spill in the Gulf. Arenstam expects the company to present its shutdown plan at some point Wednesday.

It's not clear how much oil has spewed from the damaged wellhead but local officials say it's a minuscule amount compared to the BP spill.

The Coast Guard says a towboat was pushing the barge on Mud Lake when it hit the wellhead. The towboat captain told investigators the well was not lit as required.

Now just yesterday the news reports that an 18" pipe is cut and leaking into the river headding for lake Michigain.

What a disgrace!!! I think this needs to be disseminated to all military families. Where government should be, government is missing. THey let corporations to bamboozle grieving parents of heroes. I don't get responses to this article. Anybody who fights for our protection, willing to die for his/her country is hero. We have peace because they fight and die for us.

I thought going to Iraq was not justified by anything, but who can see 40 years later? Having presence in middle east is huge. Rather than having our troops being located in Germany, they are in the center of conflict. Muslim world is waging war on America. And it is not because we are there! Knowledge that soldiers bring home is invaluable! This is different culture lead by corrupted polititians, factions, where they give you promise and laugh that you believed them. To chance that part of world by bringing democracy will take at least 40 years. If this would happen, it would mean unbelievable change and possible regime change in surrounding countries. Unfortunately America will not have patience for this and will bail out before achieving something. So yes, it's waste of brave lives of our soldiers. I can't imagine how parents must feel. I bet they support ongoing military effort so their kid did not die in vain.

They 'passed' because they stupidly volunteered to go to another country where they have NO BUSINESS, just to fuck up the lives of people they don't know and shouldn't be messing with in the first place. They weren't there 'to defend this country'. They were there to boost Halliburtons bottom line while paying-off a college loan ot two probably as well. One EXPENSIVE education for these sorry-ass MF's, judging by the 'degree; they received. To Halliburton fools like them are like but cheap expendable CANNON FODDER, and the ghettoes of America provide an ENDLESS stream of it. These douchebags were no better or different than the nazi stormtroopers who ran wild across Europe 50 years ago; an unthinking, insensitive bunch of semi-illiterate asswipes with unresolved homicidal tendencies and a complete disregard for life in general. Totally brain-washed into complacent obedience, these P'sOS would merrily mow-sown a crowd of college students as easily as they would a pack of Taliban fighters. A fact that all Americans will probably soon need to RE-LEARN, once their government starts jailing & shooting them. AGAIN.

RLR,

So should insurance corporations that people pay premiums to only have to pay out to those entities or people who are only approved by Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church, or should this be a test to allow insurance corporations the right to keep all our money, just like the banks? Soldiering is not a democracy.

If this kind information were to become common knowledge among all ranks in the military, when the crap hits the fan, as I'm sure it's going to, those serving might think twice about bearing arms against pissed off people who want this and other Govt. approved corrupt B.S. to cease. With out the military the politicians are tiny little fish in one hell of a big pond.

I think I'll forward this and anything else along these lines I pick up on to some friends in the service and see what they think about what is going on behind their backs.

2) Raping, murdering and maiming; the only 'difference' your beloved TROOPSTERS bring to Iraq & Afghanistan
3) You mean rebuilding the water wells that HE HELPED DESTROY!

Sorry, but no one cares what they think. The moment they chose to sign-over their lives by enlisting in the armed forces they became NON-ENTITIES. PROPERTY. Chattel.

NOW, theirs is NOT to reason why, theirs is but to get their legs blown off & die!

I HATE assholes who blindly support their troops, regardless of the atrocities they commit or the lack of justification for being there in the first place. Such supporters are NO FUCKING DIFFERENT than the nazi party members who justified their stormtroopers' rampage thruout Europe. Stupid dipshits that view everything thru rose-colored lenses, falsely believing their soldiers are there to "bring good" (or insert favorite excuse HERE) when in actuality all they bring is sudden, massive, VIOLENT DEATH.

WTF "good" can you asswipes bring to these people? Teaching them how to torture? Or how to commit international financial swindles? Or how to build a pay-to-play 'justice' system that favors the rich & well-connected? Or how to shoot a 14 year old girl after raping her and make it look like she was an "insurgent"?.

If God gave me the power for just ONE SECOND, I'd OBLITERATE the U.S. armed forces and send them all straight to HELL. Where they belong.

RLR, just becouse a lot of us know whats realy going on over there, many good families dont have a clue. Your words were very harsh if your one of the good people in the service protecting us and dont understand whats realy the driving force behind our goverment.

You may be right, but that was a very hurtfull way of saying it for thoes that are clueless to the real plan. Unless yr a "Puter Rat" like most of us on here are, people dont know how to find the real truth. MSM only tells people what they want them to belive.

We should not punish them for not knowing. They sign up for the good of our country and its people. Not for the goverment. Every war since 1900 has only been to make rich people richer. There neaver was a real reason for any of them

Good people signed up becouse the goverment has most people fooled. Only latly have some of us seen threw the smoke and found out whats realy going on.

"They will still have "U.N. peacekeepers" and private contractors to rely on..."

Years ago a law officer was killed at a roadblock in the town I lived in. The shooters escaped the scene but their vehicle was damaged and did not go far. A huge manhunt ensued with over 150 law officers and FBI agents searching house to house. This went on for several days. One morning while having coffee at the cafe it was crowded and my friend and I ended up sharing a table with some federal agents. They were surprised at the large collections of firearms they were seeing in almost every house they searched. One remarked, that the locals using guerilla tactics could keep several battalions of trained infantry at bay if they decided to. He said disarming our town was not a job he would want as the people would take to the hills and then all hell would break lose.

This is one small mountain town. There are thousands of towns like this in the USA. and there are plenty of people in the big cities who feel the same way.

The U.N. knows that there is no way they can go up against the American people while they have the right to bear arms.

Why do you think there is such a big push by the U.N. and others to disarm us?

As for private contractors, the first few situations involving them they will probably come out on top. Later on, what happened to those Blackwater people on the bridge in Iraq will seem mild in comparison to what they get for attacking people on their own soil.

I am against the war and voted for Obama because he said he would end it. It appears the neocons and big oil have a longer reach than he does and they still want access to middleastern oil. I will abandon Obama but I will not abandon the American Military and will do anything I can to help bring them home.

Dee Dee,

No one else shares RLR's beliefs, he might be angry because he was the one "accidently" falling off the snow pile above with his sign in the one video I posted above. Freds goals are very similar to the Talibans, and before you know it, they will all want to build a mosque on the site of the world trade center. Unfortunately, soldiers and their families have been victimized for generations by the status quo and minions such as you see above, After soldiers returned from Vietnam, they were ordered not to break formation or they would be court marshaled as people such as above spit on them. The simplest question is, why were those people allowed to be there as our soldiers returned? Look up the bonus army for just one of many other instances. Doing the "right" thing gets "complicated" when money gets involved.

If you notice, he did not answer my insurance corporation question. But there are still many who support our soldiers in life, and unfortunately, death.

That's the same excuse Adolf Eichmann tried to use, "But I didn't KNOW!". "I was told it was for the good of our country!"

Yet they hung him anyway, and justifiably so. Why TF is it so DIFFICULT for Americans to apply the same logic objectively when it comes to dealing with its OWN war criminals?

"No one else shares RLR's beliefs, ..."

MILLIONS upon MILLIONS share my beliefs, it's just that you won't find many of them among the brainwashed American SHEEPLE. Go to Europe, Asia or South America and ask them what they think of you and your continuous, stupid wars for example. They'll tell you that Vietnam taught you asswipes NOTHING. Here you are, 30 years later and embroiled in TWO Vietnams simultaneously. Hear that faint sound in the distance? It's 141 million Russians laughing their asses off at you.

I firmly God has punished you criminal bastards by blinding you to what's right and what's wrong, rendering all of you incapable of distinguishing between the two. The war crimes (while callously masquerading as a 'force of good'), the promiscuous homosexuality, the rampant fraud, the wastefulness & disregard towards earth's resources has all finally pissed Him off.

"Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the LORD'S vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence.
Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD'S hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.
Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: howl for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed.
We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go every one into his own country: for her judgment reacheth unto heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies."

"And the LORD said, "Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. 7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech." 8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. 9 Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth."

Somebody needs to give that guy a medal

Great video. They keep pulling this kind of stupidity and their invasion may get chopped off with more than a K-BAR.

I have a lot of Mexican American friends, and relatives by marriage and they want the illegals gone as much as anybody I know. I don't think any of them even own a Mexican flag, and if some miss-guided individual tried to fly one above the American Flag there would be blood. My wife's family has lost fathers sons and brothers to WWII, Korea, and Vietnam and they take great pride in being American Citizens.

4) I HATE every single fucking American asshole in uniform. I pray to God that He KILLS THEM ALL. In the meantime the Taliban seem to be doing a good enough job of it tho.

RLR, Im losing respct for you very fast, my friend. How in hell can you bash the American People for doing the right thing for the people of our country.......?

They think they are doing the right thing for our country. Again, you may be right, but "Please Turn Yr Rant" to the shadow goverment, and our goverment. The real reason all this shit has been going on now for over 50 years.

God, I hope I can sleep tonight, with the words you just spoke on all of us. We feel yr anger. I feel yr pain, but "Can-Not" stand behind you ranting on good American People, like you have done here.

DB should of choped yr posts before people like me could of read them. It Hurts, and Hurts Real Bad my friend. I would of bet my live that the goverment dident plan 911, before I found out the truth, OK.....?

Please Calm Down. Turn yr anger where it belongs, Please....! Im just as mad as you, but know the real reason behing the shadow goverment.

I should "Drink" till I fall a sleep in my puter room, tonight. One thing yr doin right, getting everyone very very up-set. Thats the way the goverment wants it to be. Next, we'll be killing each other. Just as planed.........................?

"If Americans care only sparingly for their paid, professional soldiers—the ones A.O. Scott says deserve 90 minutes of our time—they care even less about Afghan civilians. That's why they don't understand war."

John 8:7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

Deuteronomy 17:7 "The hand of the witnesses shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.Matthew 7:1 "Do not judge so that you will not be judged.John 8:10 Straightening up, Jesus said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?"Romans 2:1 Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.

Romans 2:1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

If you notice, RLR did not answer my insurance corporation question, perhaps he must consult with Fred.

Sage, I agree, I know many as well. This new group are invaders not wishing to be American, the wish to take back America. Any flag placed above ours means we are conquered. Usually only soldiers know this, hence the anger...

RlR I will not say anymore Steve did not start a anti American war site .It should be used to discuss what it was intended for.
Your views are filled with hate for people you have never met .And trust me every person i know who was a soldier
did not join to kill innocent people .What you do not understand many people for years joined as a way out of poverty
and to get a education and a stable home and food .Out of respect i will not listen to or comment on your narrow minded
views of American people.BTW I would bet you never lived here for any length of time.

rlr...ok...i understand your anger at the wars...but not at the soldiers...the decision to fight the wars was made by bush and has been continued by obama...they are the ones to blame...

"rlr...ok...i understand your anger at the wars...but not at the soldiers...the decision to fight the wars was made by bush and has been continued by obama...they are the ones to blame... "

I don't get you people. You're like that family that has a mass-murdering, rapist POS son and yet you willingly forgive him ANYTHING just because he's 'family'. Yet when the NEIGHBOR'S son goes crazy and commits all kinds of heinous crimes you scream BLOODY MURDER and want him put-away ASAP! What kind of sick reasoning is that?

The moment someone joins the armed forces, they surrender their free will and personal moral values to become just a COG in a big, fucking meat-grinding machine. "Good people" WON'T volunteer to do that, which by extension means that those who do are no longer "good". And intelligent people DON'T voluntarily place themselves in a situation where they know they'll be ordered to commit atrocious acts against fellow human beings either. Intelligent people NEVER hand-over their life & soul into the hands of CRIMINALS.
So these douchebags are not only NOT GOOD, they're NOT SMART either.

Like I said before, I think God has fucked-up your brains so that now you're INCAPABLE of distinguishing right from wrong or good from bad anymore, as evidenced by your attempted defense of the indefensible. Obama, Bush or even Adolf HItler for that matter would all have been absolutely POWERLESS if not for the scumbags that provide them with the MUSCLE they need to carry-out their evil plans.

Well. that's EXACTLY what your troopsters are; dumb fucking muscle carrying out the orders of a sick, neurotic brain.

rlr...you're missing the most basic part...and i thought it was obvious so i left it out of my story...like it or not pretty much ALL NATIONS have military capability which includes soldiers...you gotta have troops...so are you really saying that you hate anyone who signs up to fight/defend in any army anywhere in the world...

what you are really condemning is war...the taliban are an evil group...are you aware of what they do to women...i'm against the war because it's not winnable in current form and it does little good against al qaeda since it has spread into hundreds of mini-groups all over the world...that does not mean that the taliban are a nice bunch of misunderstood gents...they are horrific...and in a just world, they would be gone...
Jul 30, 2010 at 3:16 PM | Registered CommenterDailyBail
He is aware of what they did to women, etc., he just believes it is a better "lifestyle" (his words not mine). If you remember, RLR has professed admiration for the Taliban and Hitler both in the past, you have even deleted some of those posts.

Apparently those transgressions meet his past approval. Still no answer on the insurance question, hmmm, interesting.

First off, an INTELLIGENT person only joins the armed forces of their nation when they have relative assurance that their lives WON'T be squandered on pursuing someone else's private agenda or just to boost some corporations bottom line. A soldier in Uruguay or France HAS that assurance, because they know their governments are NOT routinely running around the globe actually CREATING the situations that will ultimately necessitate their deployment. They know that if they're called to defend their nation they'll be doing just that; DEFENDING their nation and NOT defending Halliburton's access to oil pipelines.

Your blind support of "the troops" equals the blind support of the douchebags that command them. You CAN'T have your cake and eat it too in this case. Sorry.

rlr...take a break..you've violated the rules, which are really quite simple...you are free to say whatever you want here but not if you are an asshole to the other commenters...

your history here includes praising hitler (repeatedly), racist comments about obama and jews, and now you attack people for supporting the troops...and again, it's your snarly manner that pisses me off more than anything...

Jul 30, 2010 at 4:53 PM | Registered CommenterDailyBail
I made like maybe three Hitler references, the last of which was weeks if not months ago. Likewise the racist comments on Mobamba and the Jews. Let's face it; you want a frank discussion WITHOUT the frankness nor the discussion.

BAN BABY BAN.

You're like the guy whose car gas indicator shows that the gas tank is running on empty, so you REMOVE the gauge to avoid dealing with the problem.

Good luck with THAT.

"you are free to say whatever you want here but not if you are an asshole to the other commenters..."

PS: what's THAT all about? I'm talking about the general American mentality, NOT any specific posters here. Why would I attack the only people who seem to get it? The people whom I agree with? The people I like?

What I AM attacking is that smug American self-serving complacency that dictates that we're ALWAYS, AUTOMATICALLY right. That ANYTHING we do is not only morally good, but practically mandated & pre-ordained by God. That we can do no evil and can therefore judge anyone else freely. Can you see the GOTT MITT UNS-ness of that?

As far as the making-fun-of-Jesus thingy; Hey, YOU guys have the right to bring up the subject while surreptitiously trying to push it onto others, *I* have the right to make FUN of it!.

Hope that didn't come across as 'snarly'.

You made multiple comments worshiping Al Queda and the Taliban in the past, and as you see above, you brought up the Bible first to justify your position. Then you mocked it on another post.

"can therefore judge anyone else freely."

You been doing alot of that... Say hello to Fred, and my people will be seeing your people, I am sure.

Still no answer on the insurance question, hmmm, interesting.

"You made multiple comments worshiping Al Queda and the Taliban in the past, and as you see above, you brought up the Bible first to justify your position"

--You LIE, I NEVER worshipped Al Qaida. As for the Taliban, allow me to clarify my position; THEY'RE AMONG THE BEST INFANTRYSOLDIERS IN THE WORLD. PERIOD. And I admire true warriors.

"...you see above, you brought up the Bible first to justify your position. Then you mocked it on another post. "

--Indeed. I might also occassionally reference OTHER works of fiction too from time to time, like Alice in Wonderland. That doesn't mean I believe in the Mad Hatter.

"Say hello to Fred..."

--OK. Hi Fred.

PS: who's Fred?
