We've done this before, our government frightened us with threats the USSR was going to bomb us, children now in their 60s were taught how to crouch under their desks in case of nuclear attacks, we were told to build bomb shelters, it was even considered that they would be required by law. I was a member of the New York State Police at the time, we had a bomb shelter at the troop headquarters with a supply of bottled water and crackers and a huge drum with a toilet seat on top in the middle of the shelter. The latter was comical in that it was co-ed and I could imagine the staff sitting there in the dark, there was no plan for lighting except flashlights, listening to one another going to the bathroom and farts echoing in that huge drum, then rationing out the water and crackers while sitting around and sleeping on the cold damp floor. There was a more sophisticated, and highly secret, civil defense bomb shelter nearby maintained by a regular staff, that was cooler than the dungeon at the troop headquarters, it had a generator for lights, shiny floors and desks, teletype machine and radio equipment plus the bottled water and crackers. This idea of canned goods and shotguns will sound as silly in a very short time.
