The obsessive pursuit of this story has the stink of anglo-imperialist group think. We're all supposed to be outraged because an American is being detained by the beaner south americans? The term "banana republic" on a graphic on this website is telling.
Personally, I hope he disappears into a south american jail and is never heard from again. He is unlikeable, he is out of place, yet he seems to think he is above it all because he is an American.
At the time of this comment, he's been taken to a hospital due to a heart attack. It's all very convenient in a 'spooky' sort of way. Seems to point in the direction of unheralded activities on his part, possibly more of the usual US meddling in foreign affairs. If that's the case, then he's getting what walked into. It's like when you wear a military uniform in war; you accept the possibility of sudden, violent death. Spies, saboteurs, agents provocateurs, etc. - they don't get the privilege of a trial. Their just reward is a bullet behind the ear when they're found out. I hope he gets what he's got coming to him and we hear no more about him.
However, if he is merely an unarmed civilian crossing the border without filling in any of the required documentation. He should get off with a reprimand or fine and at worst returned or expedited to the nation of his citizenship. Spies and saboteurs only get executed in time of war, because in peace time they make too darn great exchange pawns. (read up on the cold war for some examples)
