Paradoxically, this is an instance of real democracy in America. We Americans have never got beyond our religious beginnings and our penchant for theological niceties. The 12 Dems are simply representing this aspect of America.

When you add the fact (which would have horrified our Puritan founding fathers and perplexed our revolutionary founding fathers) that America has become about 40% Catholic, then it is even easier to understand their anti-abortion stance.

America is far from being a beacon of the Enlightenment as France became after the French Revolution, and during the Napoleonic wars, and has struggled to remain ever since.

America is, all too often, the great bastion of reaction.

I had no idea we had become 40% catholic...last i remember reading was 20% a few decades ago...

i would have thought the priest molestation case would have convinced more catholics that god doesn't exist...like it did for this LA Times religion reporter who was turned away from his lifelong belief in god after having covered the LA molestation cases....
