« The Real Reason Tim Geithner Is Afraid of Elizabeth Warren | Main | The Feinberg Report and "The Wisdom of TARP" »

Still Hold A Grudge Against Geithner? Here's Your Last Opportunity To Piss Him Off Royally Before He Starts Taking Paychecks From Goldman

Rarely are we so lucky as to ascertain what our enemy fears most.  Geithner opens his heart of darkness, and we now know how to make him very, very angry, and more than a little bit frightened.

---

This is really getting good.  I have a ton to throw at you in this post, so it'll be easiest to consume as links.  First some background.

Elizabeth Warren is the literal inspiration for the CFPA, or as it is now called the CFPB (bureau replaces agency in the acronym).  The entire idea came from an op-ed she wrote to the WSJ back in 2007.  She has been fighting tirelessly on its behalf since that day.  Wall Street and the banking industry are scared to death that she will be named chief enforcer.  Tim Geithner and Larry Summers are owned by the banks and so they are fighting her nomination.

Now the good news.  The pushback from advocay groups and voters has been off the charts.  Pundits, members of Congress and academia are all coming to Warren's defense and demanding that Obama appoint her as soon as possible.

  • "Make them vote against this hard-as-nails woman from Oklahoma who grew up poor, and who's tough on big banks," the advocate noted.  "Force the vote."

There are 2 petitions up and flying (not just running) as we speak.  The first originally had a goal of 100,000 total signatures by July 20 (started on July 16).  And they passed that number after 2 days.  So the goal has changed to 150,000, and that looks as though it will be passed this afternoon.  And these signatures are being delivered directly to the White House and Obama.

Now please sign the 2nd petition:

Please sign both petitions and pass this story on to friends.  This is perhaps your last and best opportunity to make a real difference in the life of Treasury Secretary Geithner.  After the November elections, his paychecks will likely be coming from Goldman Sachs, so this is your chance to put Warren in charge of the CFPB, and make Turbo's post-government stroll through investment banking not as pleasant as he hopes.

Do this.  Then pass it on.  Share it with anyone who cares.  Try to get your sheeple, clueless coworkers to sign.   Tell them it's a petition for 24-hour broadcasting of every season of American Idol.

On Monday, a coalition of groups fighting to reform the nation's financial system formally endorsed Harvard Law professor and bailout watchdog Elizabeth Warren to head the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Americans for Financial Reform, an alliance of more than 250 organizations that has spent the past year advocating for financial reform legislation, said that Warren is the "most experienced, effective and independent person" to serve as the critical first chief of the new agency.

The endorsement comes on the heels of Thursday's Huffington Post report that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner opposes Warren's nomination, and Friday's statements by a senior White House adviser and top Geithner lieutenants at Treasury that Warren was "well qualified" for the position, yet nonetheless was only one of three top candidates.

AFR includes top labor groups and progressive advocacy organizations with deep ties to the Obama administration, including AFL-CIO and the Service Employees International Union.

"[Elizabeth] Warren has shown a steadfast and tireless commitment to protecting consumers throughout her distinguished career and is without question the best candidate to run the new CFPB," Heather Booth, AFR's director, said in a statement.

"We join many others in encouraging the White House to quickly move to nominate Elizabeth Warren to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau," Booth added.

Some Democratic groups, like the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, announced their support for Warren on Friday. The PCCC even launched an online petition urging President Barack Obama to pick Warren as the chief of the new agency designed to protect consumers from predatory lenders. More than 100,000 people have signed it so far.

"There was some urgency to move forward" on the endorsement, an AFR spokesman said. The group drafted its statement over the weekend, intending to get it out before Monday.

The move may put increased pressure on the White House to select Warren to head the new entity. Consumer advocates and financial lobbyists agree that the first director will have a tremendous impact on the agency that will likely last beyond the director's term. A strong consumer protector will ensure tough consumer protections for years, as the agency's staff and the director's successors will take their cue from precedent; a weak chief nearly guarantees an ineffectual agency that will fall short of the promises advocated by the soon-to-be enacted financial reform legislation.

Sources say Geithner supports one of his top deputies, Michael Barr, for the position. Barr, a former law professor and Treasury Department official during the Clinton administration, has drawn raves from consumer groups for his role in ensuring the survival of the new agency as the financial reform bill made its way through Congress. Though reformers have clashed with Barr on other aspects of the bill, he's widely praised for his efforts on consumer protection.

But the agency is largely Warren's idea. A noted defender of the middle class, she's widely embraced by progressives and Democrats in Congress.

"Elizabeth Warren is a great, great champion for consumers and middle-class families across the country," White House senior adviser David Axelrod told reporters on a Friday conference call. "She has helped inform this effort greatly and what has been done here in many ways reflects something she's been advocating for years and years and years."

Warren introduced the idea for a consumer agency in a 2007 journal article. She's done extensive research on the debt-strapped middle class, bankruptcy and the working poor.

Geithner's spokesman, Andrew Williams, called Warren a "driving force" behind the new agency's creation.

Warren currently serves as chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel, a watchdog created to keep tabs on the federal bailout. Barr serves as Treasury's assistant secretary for financial institutions.

The third candidate, Eugene Kimmelman, is a former top official at consumer advocacy groups Consumers Union, the Consumer Federation of America, Public Citizen. He now works in the Justice Department's antitrust division.

Kimmelman's former employers are part of AFR.

The Real US Government
by Glenn Greenwald
The Washington Post's Dana Priest demonstrates once again why she's easily one of the best investigative journalists in the nation -- if not the best -- with the publication of Part I of her series, co-written with William Arkin, detailing the sprawling, unaccountable, inexorably growing secret U.S. Government: what the article calls "Top Secret America." To the extent the series receives much substantive attention (and I doubt it will), the focus will likely be on the bureaucratic problems it documents: the massive redundancies, overlap, waste, and inefficiencies which plague this "hidden world, growing beyond control" -- as though everything would better if Top Secret America just functioned a bit more effectively. But the far more significant fact so compellingly illustrated by this first installment is the one I described last week when writing about the Obama administration's escalating war on whistle blowers:

Most of what the U.S. Government does of any significance -- literally -- occurs behind a vast wall of secrecy, completely unknown to the citizenry. . . . Secrecy is the religion of the political class, and the prime enabler of its corruption. That's why whistle blowers are among the most hated heretics. They're one of the very few classes of people able to shed a small amount of light on what actually takes place.

Yes, A Period of Consequences
The time for evasion is over.
http://www.weeklystandard.com/articles/yes-period-consequences
We’ve allowed our universities to become politically correct, our media to become juvenile, and our entertainments to become ever-more adolescent—and then we wonder why we’re baffled by the difficulties we have as a society in being candid, serious, and grown up. As C.S. Lewis put it, “We make men without chests and expect from them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst.” Now we are entering a period of consequences in which delaying the decay is no longer enough, and in which the counter-cultural and reconstructive cultural efforts that are underway will not only have to be intensified, but will have to make a difference quickly.

Market volatility and the breakdown of fundamental and technical indicators are only a few signs. There are others which are more subtle and not visible to the human eye—below the surface. They show up in bear-o-metric readings of the nation's money supply, credit expansion and the breakdown of corporate earnings. With all of these readings, we know that a storm is coming. The question is: "What kind will it be?"

Fahrenheit 451.....we were warned in 1953

on October 19, 1953, when a young Californian named Ray Bradbury published a novel with the odd title of Fahrenheit 451.

In a gripping story at once disturbing and poetic, in which firemen burn books and the state suppresses learning. Meanwhile, the citizenry sits by watching big screens in a drug-induced and media-saturated indifference. More relevant than ever a half-century later, Fahrenheit 451 has achieved the rare distinction of being both a literary classic and a perennial bestseller.

“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” What did Barack H. Obama mean when he said that? Here is the short answer, he didn’t say it. The author of the above quote is Winston Churchill. Churchill also said, “The truth is incontrovertible. Panic may resent it, ignorance may deride it, malice may distort it, but there it is.” I ask you, what does Obama hate or worse fear about the truth? He so infrequently uses it to forward his agenda or lead as “The Chosen One”. Why would Obama insult the British people by removing a bust of Sir Winston Churchill from the White House? What now sits in its place in the oval office?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/barackobama/4623148/Barack-Obama-sends-bust-of-Winston-Churchill-on-its-way-back-to-Britain.html “A bust of the former prime minister once voted the greatest Briton in history, which was loaned to George W Bush from the Government's art collection after the September 11 attacks, has now been formally handed back. But when British officials offered to let Mr. Obama to hang onto the bust for a further four years, the White House said: "Thanks, but no thanks."”

President Bush…"He was a man of great courage. He knew what he believed. And he really kind of went after it in a way that seemed like a Texan to me," said the President Bush explaining why he would like the likeness of an Englishman placed inside the Oval Office. "He charged ahead, and the world is better for it."

What did it represent to Obama? Any guesses???
Jul 21, 2010 at 4:55 PM | Unregistered CommenterZ
Obama is about to open the White House doors to UK Prime Minister, David Cameron. Don’t expect to see Obama bow, Cameron is not a Saudi king nor is he a Japanese emperor. Why should we care and what does it matter? I most likely was one of the few people who saw the Ghost Writer. There was a lot of drama surrounding the movie as Polanski was the director. Ghost Writer was thought-provoking because it was pretty obvious that the main character, Adam Lang, was a nom de plume for Tony Blair. Don’t rush out to see the movie. Apart from the intrigue and a few scenes between Ewan McGregor’s character, the ghost writer, and Olivia William’s character, Ruth Lang, the movie fell short of my recommendation. The reason I bring it up is because David Cameron makes Tony Blair look like an outsider to real money and real power. When I see David Cameron, I see pedigree and connections. I see the Queen’s prized corgi. I see Nat Rothschild and the Russian mafia. I see secret Bilderberg meetings. He would be right at home talking about the “small people” with the BP Chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg. Don’t be fooled by Cameron’s first policy initiative, the Big Society. It is supposed to be the redistribution of power from state to the people. To me and many others, The Big Society stinks of The New World Order.

So, what will Obama see when he meets David Cameron. What will David Cameron think of Obama? Are they just pawns in the continuing game of consolidating wealth and power with economic depressions?

i read everything on the site and i understand what z. is doing with his comments...when ken posts one of his unintelligible rants (not everything is of this form...about 1/2 of ken's posts)...then Z. tries to kill him with words...knowing that i will come along eventually and delete everything...

here's my opinion...z...most of what you post has great value...you are around to discuss your comments and you write original stuff that is often really good and quite funny...my problem has always been your attacks...but we agreed to start fresh a few weeks back and you have been much better about being cool with everyone...and i appreciate it...

ken...you are doing better at being around to discuss your comments but you still post too much BS...i like that you post links but other times you post pure crap...

my advice for harmony is this...z...stop reading ken's posts...i will take care of deleting stuff that's worthless...

ken...keep improving your comments...don't bash us, laugh or post garbled nonsense...i'm tired of the all caps and push hamburger nonsense...

and z. you owe spidey an apology from long, long ago...for what it's worth, that's how i see things...
