Picture Of The Day - Greek Parthenon Lit By Lightning

Rumor has it the Greeks still want German reparations for the Nazi occupation of Athens and the destruction of the Acropolis and Parthenon during WW II.

The Parthenon, completed in 432BC, was originally dedicated to the goddess Athena. Its main function was to shelter a statue of the goddess made out of gold and ivory.

In 1656, a lightning strike to a powder keg destroyed structures on the Acropolis - but fortunately spared the Parthenon.

Nazis raise their flag over the Greek monuments they destroyed.  Soon Germany will return to take from the Greeks what they only briefly occupied in the 1940s.

Perhaps the Greeks have heard that the ECB is on its way to Athens to take over tax collection in Greece and collect the deed for the Acropolis and Parthenon.

@ the don...i wondered the same thing myself....i read in a story today that 1 of them was leaving for russia and they thought he would not come back...so they had to get him...and if you're going after 1 you have to take them all down at the same time...

i read a lot on it today...it really sounds like these 11 never achieved anything substantial in terms of access to classified data...and there were no espionage charges...it's a strange case...

Sometimes the current administration just needs a win under their belt to break the losing streak but there certainly is something fishy about the lack of information so far.

That lighning bolt seems to resemble how GOLD'S been doing on a 2 year chart. And if you look closely you'll see how it shoots UP at the top of the pic.

Happy times.

The Parthenon was destroyed in 1647. The Ottomans, then occupying Greece, were using it as a powder magazine for a battery of guns mounted on the Acropolis, overlooking the sea. The gunpowder was set off by cannonballs fired by a Venetian fleet under Admiral Morosini, causing the collapse of the building.
