Obama, The One-Term President

By Roger Simon, Chief Political Columnist for Politico

---

Q: Will Barack Obama be a one-term president?

A: Yes, he might last that long.

Honest to goodness, the man just does not get it. He might be forced to pull a Palin and resign before his first term is over. He could go off and write his memoirs and build his presidential library. (Both would be half-size, of course.)

I am not saying Obama is not smart; he is as smart as a whip. I am just saying he does not understand what savvy first-term presidents need to understand:

You have to stay on message, follow the polls, listen to your advisers (who are writing the message and taking the polls) and realize that when it comes to doing what is right versus doing what is expedient, you do what is expedient so that you can get reelected and do what is right in the second term. If at all possible. And it will help your legacy. And not endanger the election of others in your party. And not hurt the brand. Or upset people too much.

Recently, President Obama decided he had to weigh in on the controversy surrounding the proposed construction of a Muslim community center and mosque near ground zero in New York.

It is a controversy Obama could have ducked (he had been doing so for weeks), but he finally decided he needed to lend his voice and the weight of the presidency to speaking out for what is right.

So on Friday night, he said: “As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country. That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan in accordance with local laws and ordinances.”

See what I mean about not getting it?

John Feehery, a Republican consultant, told Sheryl Gay Stolberg of The New York Times, “This is not a unifying decision on his part; he chose a side. I understand why he did this, but politically I think it’s a blunder.”

You could not put the conventional wisdom more clearly: It is far better for a president to do nothing than to choose a side. Even if the side he chooses is the right one from an ethical or moral perspective, it is a “blunder” politically because inevitably it will upset some people.

Hmmmm, I don't know what to think about the left using so much witless sarcasm. What? Oh, right. Jon Leibowitz Stewart seems to do alright with it. Well, so be it but I don't have to like it.

Is this really the hopey changey the Obama voter was promised? Why weren't they upset by Obama's running mate Sarah Palin?

Did Roger Simon shower after writing that drivel? Gee whiz DB, what got you to post this? It is not even Huff fluff.

i didn't view it as sarcasm...i know that others have...i took it completely literally...obama the one-term president...even drudge was caught off-guard...when he first posted it this morning...he made no mention of sarcasm...only after a few hours, did he change the headline and add the word sarcasm to it...

i'm being completely honest...i think it was a solid takedown of obama...granted that i read it quickly and some of the sarcasm may have been lost on me...but i posted it with the intention of it being a slap in obama's face from the left...i am completely against the mosque at ground zero...but this is the closest i'm going to get to doing a post about it...

What do Muslims think of the right of other religions to practice their faiths. If you look, you will see. For generations the establishment has hid the reality, yet defended their rights. If someone did to them what they have done to every other faith for 1000's of years, you would see holy war.

Instead you see foreign aid. We pay to be persecuted...

Does he still have the passport he used to "vacation" in Pakistan many years ago when Pakistan didn't allow Americans into their country? Hmmmmm.

We will leave the hopey changey to you and your Michelle fashion, Obama shirtless, vacation, lunch, and swim reports.

You sound like Steven "Cojo" Cojocaru.

And yes, we still give aid to nations who fundamentally hate us.

I see most of the passport is redacted. Which of his Social Security numbers did he use? I also noticed Soetoro used his Barak Hussein Obama alias. Is this legal on a U.S. passport?

John... It is all spin and damage control. I think it is another mistake as this will only fuel the fire.
