Faced with this mountain of debt, policy makers will have just two choices: repudiate the debt or engage in hyper inflation to monetize it.........And faced with that choice the Treasury will likely protect the currency

It is not literally impossible that the Federal Reserve could unleash the Zimbabwe option and repudiate the national debt indirectly through hyperinflation, rather than have the Treasury repudiate it directly. But my guess is that, faced with the alternatives of seeing both the dollar and the debt become worthless or defaulting on the debt while saving the dollar, the U.S. government will choose the latter. Treasury securities are second-order claims to central-bank-issued dollars. Although both may be ultimately backed by the power of taxation, that in no way prevents government from discriminating between the priorities of the claims. After the American Revolution, the United States repudiated its paper money and yet successfully honored its debt (in gold). It is true that fiat money, as opposed to a gold standard, makes it harder to separate the fate of a government's money from that of its debt. But Russia in 1998 is just one recent example of a government choosing partial debt repudiation over a complete collapse of its fiat currency.
A more likely outcome, it seems to me, is that the US will make good on Treasury debt but repudiate soft obligations like Social Security and Medicare. That way the US would continue to be able to borrow in the future. And all it would require would be a Congressional vote lowering the outlays for these programs.

In the latest data for food assistance through SNAP we find that 200,000 more Americans were added to the program. No one ever believes that they will get cancer, fall victim to some personal tragedy, become old, broken, poor, feeble or lose their capacities. It is not human nature to engage the ugly side of life, we're hard wired to denial and have usb cable connections to hope and delusion. We see everything the way we want to see it and tune out reality when it intrudes on our fantasies. We clap for those that espouse hope and promise and feel good, and we denounce those that would infringe on our denial. It's human nature to do so.
But we all grow old, have our hips fall out, lose our hair, our memories our abilities. It is inevitable, guaranteed, a function of life and for most, vehemently fought until life pours into our foxholes and overwhelms our mental defenses and delusional fortifications. As much as you never saw your age spots develop or your hairline reseed you wake up one morning, trip over the cat, fall down breaking your hip and die of pneumonia in some hospital bed a week later with tubes up your nose and prick.
My father lived his whole life in denial and delusion and was a mean son of a bitch every inch of the way. He had contempt for everything and everyone and his fuel for life was bitching and complaining, generally making life miserable for all those around him and himself. He had a version in his disturbed head of how the world should be that wasn't grounded in rational thought but rather was spawned by his demons and needs and wants regardless of their evil or good to his own being. In short he was a grown child with all the primal hungers of a child and none of the discipline of an adult. A couple of months ago his remains were fed into a commercial bone crushing machine and the chips and fragments poured into a green plastic box to be buried at the National Cemetery for veterans not far from here. The wreckage that was his life condensed into bone colored ruins and poured into a green plastic box that will probably outlast his bone chips.
As a nation we are just like a 21 year old lad full of hormones, beer and spunk. We are incapable of seeing forward in time, collectively wired to deny the possibility of national cancer. We cheer those who promise parties and endless kegs of suds high fiveing everything that brings us pleasure or we bitch and complain like my father that the world won't conform to our standards and we go about our lives in abject denial of everything around us that is unpleasant, non gratifying or counter to our wants and desires. We are a collective nation of immature self gratifying hormone filled young men or we are a nation of grumpy old men stuck on anger and resentment. In either case, no one sees or thinks about the rows of green plastic boxes lined up alongside the bone crushing machine waiting impassively for truth and reality to bring them what is inevitably and inescapably theirs.
It is impossible to sustain the unsustainable. A lad can't drink a keg of beer a week and not prematurely say hello to the bone crushing machine. One can't vent sound and fury that life doesn't conform to his vision without bursting a blood vessel and paying an early visit to the bone crushing machine. 300 million Americans can't have every trapping of life promised and delivered to them on the backs of the unborn without their gravy train derailing and throwing them right in front of the bone crushing machine with the rows of empty, waiting green plastic boxes. It is impossible to sustain the unsustainable.
Yet this nation lines up like so many frat boys downing pints and screwing sorority chicks till all hours of the night or stews in their anger at the raw deals handed to them demanding that the tides obey their will. We expect the beer to be free and unending, the women willing and the oceans to be silent when we speak. We applaud and elect those who say they have the keys to the brewery or who have mastered the magic that compels the seas to stillness. We collectively behave as if we'll live forever with no ill ever befalling us or we live in quiet desperation cursing unmet requests. We do not see how fleeting is youth and we do not see that the axis of the planet doesn't run through our head. We deny the existence of the bone crushing machine and ignore the green plastic boxes. We demand that the machine be turned off and the boxes made into toys to be placed in happy meals. We storm ahead on borrowed time and borrowed money refusing to acknowledge our fragility or our delusions. We want what we want either in youthful bliss or middle age anger and we will not be denied no matter how loud the sounds of the bone crushing machine.
We are the wrecks among the ruins. We have wrecked ourselves with moral decay, impetuous youthful delusions, irrational adult expectations, myopic visions of life and its realities. We have fed at the trough of denial, drank too many kegs of delusion, cursed too many invisible foes and patently refused to accept that the unsustainable cannot be sustained. We have deluded ourselves into believing that we can catch the last fish today and still have salmon cakes tomorrow, cut down the last tree and still have shade, fill the world with billions of cars and still have air, borrow from generations yet born to fulfill our wants and not leave them on a smoldering planet with only the bone crushing machine still running. Sustaining the unsustainable is impossible. Beer as your only beverage is unsustainable, cursing the waves is unsustainable, taking from the future for today is unsustainable.
None of us avoids the bone crushing machine in the end but how we arrive there is within our control. We can go feet first with dignity or we can be shoved in head first by an indifferent mortician. We can allow for a future for our children and their children or we can all have one final kegger and line up on an assembly line to be automatically fed into the bone crushing machine en mass.
It appears to me that the choice has been made, the kegger is well underway and the lad who maxed out his credit card to buy the last tub of suds also lit the brewery on fire on his way out the door. We've forsaken sustainable for one last bash, mortgaged the future for one last hurrah, burned the brewery that made the beer and turned up the speed on the national bone crushing machine and tied off the accelerator.We've chosen to try and sustain the unsustainable, embraced those who in their ignorance anger or delusion say that the impossible is possible. We've chosen to catch the last fish, cut down the last tree, drink the last pint, take one more lash at the breaking waves and in so doing have sealed our fate inside of a little green plastic box. aye
There is no fix for what ails us. The blueprints drawn up to build the system were faulty from the start yet we continually try to fix the machine and keep running what is inherently flawed from conception. We pour unheard of energy and effort into the carburetor of the faulty machine even as it spits and sputters refusing to abandon it or salvage it for parts to build a new machine. We dance while the brewery burns, lash at the waves though they continue to mount and we clap mindlessly at every leader of the keg party who keeps the lights on and a sound barrier between the revelers and the constantly humming bone crushing machine right outside the door. The unsustainable cannot be sustained and the bone crushing machine cannot be denied. We live now as wrecks among the ruins blinded by our youthful ignorance or our aged anger and rage.
