I haven't read the WaPo piece re demolishing houses (my latest Blackberry sucks complete ass for web display), but I suspect they engage in this practice due to real estate taxes--not for any market-clearing function. When a homeowner defaults, the mortgagor is presented with the tab for real estate taxes. More shortsightedness and ineptitude from the mental retards who run the mega-banks.
