Liberalism is a mental disorder.

"Government is responsible for 4% of the drugs on the market today."

That's just a lie. New technologies come out of Universities that are funded by the government. Most of the medical breakthroughs we see today came from grants and subsidies in the university system that were later commercialized at corporations. The innovations don't come from the corporations themselves unless the scientists incorporate, which has become the new normal. Give me a break, this is dishonest reporting. Also, where are the statistics? You can't form a balanced opinion on a handful of scary anecdotes. I'd like to wipe the "gee shucks" smarmy grin off that guy's face with my foot. Corporate scumbag tool.

If you think what we have now is better than single payer you are insane. Insurance that is only affordable if purchased through employment is a form of slavery and a barrier to entry for small companies. Sure it would be ideal to have a free market in health insurance products, but how are we going to get there from here? Wake up.

Will, are you happy with the public school system? It certainly has failed you.
Mar 12, 2010 at 11:20 PM | Unregistered CommenterZarathustra
Well, maybe public education has failed me too, because this subject, like economics, is so over my head I can't discern all the information - from both sides. That's the problem with so many social issues: They bring a tidal wave of statistics, studies, opinions - pro and con - and you just have to research and give it your best educated guess.

My gut tells me health care in the U.S. is too damn expensive, and that most people get it through their employers. Why is it so expensive? Who's making all that money? I think it's the insurance company middlemen like Humana and Aetna who should be eliminated. Can't it be a matter between patients and doctors? If I have a medical problem I'll contact a doctor, thank you.

And let's not forget big pharma companies who spend millions of dollars in advertisements telling you you have every medical condition they sell a pill for.

I have very good health insurance though my spouse's employer. But the $500/month is deducted from her paycheck. We hardly use the insurance. So where does all the unused money go?

Liberalism is a mental disorder.

There crazy people who want affordable Health care for everyone, no more gun violence, reformed prisoners, decriminalization of drugs, no soldiers dieing for nothing, a better America that cares for everyone.

Yeah, they are crazy!

I have complete confidence that government run health care will come in under budget, be wildly efficient, and won't cost anyone a dime. So many government programs that have come before it have proven a spotless track record of government efficiency, no bureaucracy, no waste, fraud, abuse, glad-handing of politicians, destroying of documents, or lying to the public.

Now I'm getting on my purple unicorn to fly across the country. Maybe I'll pass some pigs on the way.

Steve asked where did all of his unused health insurance cost go. Well, Steve, your wife belongs to a group health plan. That means all of the employees in your wife's group are insured by the pot of money that all participating employees pay into. Your unused (by you) money went to pay for someone's cancer treatment, or someone else's heart bypass surgery. Count your blessings that you weren't the one who needed it, instead of being upset that you didn't get any benefit for the money you paid.

Let's look at it this way. Would you bet someone $3600 that you and your wife would not get sick in the next twelve months, and if you did you would pay them or if you didn't they would pay you? No, you probably wouldn't take that chance. I know I wouldn't. But if you want to take that chance, just drop your health insurance and go self-insured. Why don't you want to do that? It's because the cost of being wrong is way too high. But that's the risk that the insurance companies are taking every day.

If you really want to bring down the cost of healthcare in this country there are several things that can be done that don't involve government intrusion into our lives. First off, limit these ridiculous trial-lawyer inspired lawsuits that cause doctors to perform so many tests on patients out of fear that they will be held liable if they didn't check for anything that might have the remotest connection to the patient's symptoms. Secondly, allow people to by health insurance across state lines to increase the competition. Thirdly, make most plans high-deductible so that patients think twice before running to the doc for every ache and pain (presently it's a "why-not, it's free mentality).

We all really need to be really really careful about inviting government to have more control in our lives. That is the way freedom is lost, bit by bit. Next thing you know, you won't be able to get healthcare if your politics aren't to the liking of someone else. I would rather foot the bill myself in total than to have the government lording over by healthcare decisions.

I'm with you Leroy! It's simple economics. If the Government would limit malpractice lawsuit payouts to a reasonable amount, the insurance costs would decline as Doctors stop doing unnecesary tests. Increasing competition by allowing the purchase of insurance across state lines only makes sense. It worked for car insurance! Once people were able to shop outside of their state, companies like Geico, The General and such sprung into the picture and the prices went down. The bottom line here is anyone who thinks we can insure more people for less money without reducing the amount of care across the board is out of their minds. If there is as much fraud and waste as the Dems say, fix that waste and show us you're capable of reducing costs. If this bill wasn't too expensive, why do the taxes start now and the benefits start in a few years? People need to stop listening to the politicians and start using their brains before their brains dry up and shrink to the size of raisons. Looking at some of the posts, it might be too late.

We already have government run health care. State's have monopolies on access to health care.

MRI - give me a break - most internal imaging can be had for a 50$ ultra-sound. Now everything needs an MRI - even a fart bubble - for 7000$!

How can the Canadian system be nay nayed when they rank above the US in health care - it cost twice as much in the US as the next highest country for health care. Why doesn't Sossel talk about Americans who go to Canada to get health services? How many big health suit's set on the boards of ABC or as ABC news "policy" directors?

The only health metrics the US is top of list for are: 1) Preventable health related deaths, 2) cost of health care and 3) infant mortality.

Wow - rich people can come to the US to get medical attention - who would've ever guessed?

Go to the Post Office, the Police Department, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and then ask yourself the simple question, does this look like a good way to receive healthcare?

Stop worrying about the costs, the profits the insurance companies or any other useless pursuit, there is only one thing to remember, the current set up attracts the best and the brightest, now what government agency can say that?

And in the end, why would anyone want the system to change? We have more high end healthcare than we know what to do with and no one in this country has ever been denied, despite the pathetic ramblings of the liar class.

If we are going to let the goverment run our healthcare, let's hire the Chinese government and get more bang for our depreciating bucks.
Mar 14, 2010 at 11:20 PM | Unregistered CommenterZarathustra
Hell lets hire the Cubans, They work real cheap and and the're close. They might even give us a better discount if we recognize their rights as a Nation and let trade in.

ANYTHING gov run turns into a 3 ring circus with unicorns .Now what kills me is people think poor people in America will benefit
from this.Wake up the poorest have the best medical coverage from the gov already .Trust me i seen it in ohio its called choice
care.I could never afford to pay all or most of my guys insurance .One problem was when we all had killer ins idiots would
go to the doctor just to get a note for work or run to the doc if they farted because it cost 5 or ten bucks.BTW Drug company
profits are way way above insurance profits .Keep the gov out of as much as possible .IF they want to help healthcare there
are ways other than using a steam roller to crush a bug.Once the gov is in the never get out .To many hands in the till.
