John Boehner Says In Order To Pay For The Wars, We Need To Raise The Social Security Retirement Age To 70 (VIDEO)

Video:  Boehner on fixing Social Security -- June 29, 2010

Flashback to last Summer.

According to the source, Boehner said the following:

Ensuring there's enough money to pay for the war will require reforming the country's entitlement system, Boehner said.  He said he'd favor increasing the Social Security retirement age to 70 for people who have at least 20 years until retirement, tying cost-of-living increases to the consumer price index rather than wage inflation and limiting payments to those who need them.

"We need to look at the American people and explain to them that we're broke," Boehner said. "If you have substantial non-Social Security income while you're retired, why are we paying you at a time when we're broke?  We just need to be honest with people."

If this is what we have to look forward to from Republicans if they regain power, I'm giving it all up.  Continuing the expensive and illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan makes very little sense unless your goal is simply to support the military-industrial complex.  Strategically, Al Qaida and terrorism are regional problems, requiring regional solutions.  Victories in Iraq and Afghanistan won't help against Al Qaida of Yemen, but they might cost us an additional trillion, and Boehner seems to have no problem with that possibility.

Boehner is a hack, America would not be broke if it was not for people like him and Frank, etc. Regretably he is from my district.

What am I missing here? Retirement age for full Social Security benefits already is age 70. Thank Bob Dole for that one. Do I expect to collect a dime of it? Does the president fart unicorns? Another Republican Congress would only have one benefit: Obama becomes an ineffective lame duck and the U.S. might survive to 2012. But things certainly will NOT get better.

We're broke because we have a majority of people in government that ignore the people and bend over or get on their knees for any special interest that will throw a few thousand or more in campaign donations their way. Most of the members of the U.S. Congress are a complete disgrace to the principles this country was founded on. If the people wake up for the 2010 - 2012 elections and start reclaiming their country by kicking those worthless ---holes out on their butt. The U.S.A. may become again the great Democracy the founding fathers intended. Instead of the out of control corrupt Corporatocracy it is now.

hey good point ken...send boehner to fight...

and sage...you know i'm with you on this...we have to get some new people in congress and then they need to respond on these issues...and god forbid, we elect a new crowd and they do the same out-of-control spending, there might actually be riots here like in greece...but for the opposite reasons...they protest about the cuts...and we would protest in order to end the wars and shrink government...patience is wearing thin...

Yes DB, it is a complicated issue, and both parties are involved in filling the S.S. pot with IOU's instead of the money out of our checks, among other distortions of the truth.

No, I think cutting congressional benefits might work better. But above all, let's not stop spending on wars. The defense industry campaign contributions are vitally needed to fund our elections.

boehner wants to move it to 70 for everyone...

Interesting thing about that: indulge me the fantasy that I may someday collect Social Security. The latest pamphlet I received from FICA estimated my take at age 70 at $2,000 month. Pretty awful, but more than I made at my last job. And if I ever work again, I’m looking at a probably 40 percent pay cut. If I start Social Security at age 62, the amount is $1,200. Obviously the incentive is there to work to 70. My worry is by my 62nd birthday, I may have been underemployed for 9 years. In this permanent recession, I doubt working to age 70 is a real option.
Jun 30, 2010 at 7:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterJohn S
Many jobs working till 70 is not a viable option and pay cuts will start years earlier since not everyone can be a Walmart greeter at the same time.

Ever see 70 year old construction workers, or linemen, or tree trimmers, or mechanics, or any other physically demanding job? Of course Congress can do it, they do nothing anyway, except run up 100,000 dollar bar tabs on their planes...

All of us can't be Congressmen, no one would be left to mooch off of.

Did anyone tell The clown that Social security has already been paid for and the wars that he voted to start were not. Why would he want to steal the retirement money from the old to pay for wars that we failed to fund when he could? I well believe our elected officials when they stop payments to foreign aid before they steal my retirement money.

Yes, above all don't stop killing people! After all, it's better to drive everyone bankrupt, send all our veterans out into the streets, gut our infrastructure and buy out every social program there is than for the DYING to stop! After all, all that death and destruction is PROTECTING us! Honestly . . . Anyone who thinks we're safer because people in the mid-east are dead by way of our actions, and the continuous irradiation and poisoning of their lands, ought to ask how happy we would be if some benevolent dictatorship across the globe was invading and killing us because we needed "nation-building," and they needed to get their man in office. Doesn't sound like such a sweet deal now does it? They (well, not me or you or ordinary people, but politicians) can stomach killing others, but can't bear the sight of seeing their own (note that you are not part of this group, the "haves") treated the same way.
These hypocritical politicians should grab a rifle and sign up for basic if they think they're making a difference over there. And their kids too, after all plenty of people's kids are dying already for this nonsense, why not put their own blood in harm's way and see if they keep funding this idiotic war on peace? Where is all their media-driven "patriotism" at?

"Why are they paying Social Security?" What an ARROGANT question! Congress passed a LAW that Social Security be taken from our wages and that the MONEY in the SS Fund would be used ONLY for paying SS Benefits and nothing else. Then Congress passed a law permitting them to transfer the SS funds to the general fund so they could spend it. Now Social Security is bankrupt due to Congress reckless spending. We need a petition to place Congress on Social Security and transfer the money Congress is paying themselves for retirement to the Social Security fund and place the Social Security funds back into a trust to be used ONLY for SS Benefits. Add to that Congress gets no more pay raises or benefits packages without a 2/3 majority vote by the voters placed on the November 2 ballots (not special elections). Remove the medical benefits Congress has and place them on the same medicare we all have. Hey they can afford to pay for their own medical more than the common working man can. Congress is CORRUPT. Both sides of the isle are CORRUPT. Send all the CONGRESSIONAL RAT BASTARDS to the unemployment line. No more Corporatocracy. Wake up America and take back our Government of the people, by the people and FOR the people. No more special interest Congressional spending. No more back room deals that benefit only our "representatives"! Does Congress represent YOU? America is being BANKRUPTED by the ones YOU voted in office to represent YOU!
Check out the Constitution Party.

John Boehner wants to raise YOUR retirement age to 70.
Not a WORD about raising CONGRESS'S retirement age.
Congress cut off COLA for Social Security Seniors for the last two years, claiming "THERE IS NO INFLATION".
Congress got THEIR COLA ..... "DUE TO INFLATION."

I TRULY become incensed when I hear some blowhard Politician state that Universal Healthcare would be "SOCIALIST". Michigan legislators get FREE, LIFETIME, healthcare after just SIX years...... members of Congress enjoy "cradle to grave" SOCIALIST medical and retirement benefits that outstrip those of the old Soviet Central Committee members. Salary and benefits [edit] Salaries As of January 2010, the annual salary of each Representative is $174,000.[13] The Speaker of the House and the Majority and Minority Leaders earn more: $223,500 for the Speaker and $193,400 for their party leaders (the same as Senate leaders). A cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA) increase takes effect annually unless Congress votes to not accept it. Congress sets members' salaries; however, the Twenty-seventh Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits a change in salary (but not COLA[14]) from taking effect until after the next general election. Representatives are eligible for lifetime benefits after serving for five years, including a pension, health benefits, and social security benefits.[15]
MEANWHILE - FEDERAL WORKERS: Earning double their private counterparts
Federal salaries have grown robustly in recent years, according to a USA TODAY analysis of Office of Personnel Management data. Key findings:
Government-wide raises. Top-paid staff have increased in every department and agency. The Defense Department had nine civilians earning $170,000 or more in 2005, 214 when Obama took office and 994 in June.
Long-time workers thrive. The biggest pay hikes have gone to employees who have been with the government for 15 to 24 years. Since 2005, average salaries for this group climbed 25% compared with a 9% inflation rate.
Federal workers earning $150,000 or more make up 3.9% of the workforce, up from 0.4% in 2005.
Since 2000, federal pay and benefits have increased 3% annually above inflation compared with 0.8% for private workers, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis.
"CNBC: Despite a long and deep recession, the collective personal wealth of congressional members increased by more than 16 percent between 2008 and 2009, according to a study released Wednesday by the Center for Responsive Politics."
Cut ALL government pay AND pensions 50% ..... if they don't LIKE IT, they can QUIT and go work in PRIVATE INDUSTRY.
60 percent of the federal government workforce is represented by LABOR UNIONS...... WHY?

For ALL Politicians, Federal, and State workers.
1) Make all politician's pay a percentage of the AVERAGE pay of their constituents. That would give them INCENTIVE to get jobs back from China.
2) Make all politician's retirement plans a percentage of the AVERAGE retirement plan of their constituents, that provides INCENTIVE to work for the PEOPLE.
3) Make all politicians get on SOCIAL SECURITY, like the rest of us, and dissolve their fancy, overpaid plans. That will provide INCENTIVE to fix what THEY BROKE.
4) Make all politician's medical benefits a percentage of the AVERAGE benefits of their constituents, that provides INCENTIVE to work for the PEOPLE .
5) Make all politician's pensions dependent on the security of their constituent's pensions. If the People are losing their pensions due to economic distresses then the politicians should also.
6) ALL government workers and politicians will collect benefits at the same age as the AVERAGE, PRIVATE CITIZEN.
COPY AND PASS ON
Social Security is NOT an "entitlement" ........ for those who PAID FOR IT.
Social Security is a PROPERTY RIGHT ....... for those who PAID FOR IT.

Why do we have retirement programs for our elected officials. We should demand that every cent in all retirement programs for staff and elected officials be put into the social security accounts. Congressman weiner who left in disgrace left after 13 years with $1,300,000 in his congressional retirement accounts along with the ability to keep some of his reelection money.

We have developed a class of professional politician and it is time to get rid of them.

BTW I paid man thousands of dollars into social security and it was looted by the professional political type. We should take all assets from any elected official until every penny is paid back.

Paying benefits from the Social Security account of which citizens have previously paid in to is the legal and moral action to take. Denying payment of these funds because of governmental theft and or mismanagement is a crime. Thereby making any person associated with this theft and delay or denial of benefits a criminal. The government is a criminal enterprise merely posing as a governing body. John Boehner is scum.

Of war and debt, James Madison said: "Of all the enemies to public liberty WAR is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other.
>
> War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes-- and armies, debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few. In war, too, the discretionary power of the Executive is extended; its influence in dealing out offices, honours, and emoluments is multiplied; and all the means of seducing the minds, are added to those of subduing the force, of the people. . ."

Did any Founders envision Social Security?. Search Agrarian Justice by Thomas Paine!!! Enlightening!

The US Government has been borrowing from the Social Security fund into which you have paid with every single paycheck.

The largest single holder of US Government debt is the American people, who hold about 20% of all US Government debt, more than China and more than Saudi Arabia.

The US Government is already insolvent and unable to meet their obligations, but while the US Government is afraid of missing payments to the bankers and to the foreign creditors, it is totally unafraid of defaulting on the American people, who it believes are incapable of expressing any anger or disappointment at the betrayal.

So Lyin' Joe Lieberman and now Boehner are trying to sell you the lie that if you don't allow the US Government to embezzle the retirement money you already paid into the system, the terrorists will win.
