My bucket list includes going out to look at these magnificent trees.
Being an East Coasty, the largest trees I have climbed are about half the size of one of these beasts. Back in the day before line setting techniques became an important part of safety on the job, we would hook a tree to the top, then take the hooks off when we reached the crown.. It was arduous work.
One day we went down to Gibson Island to cut a few trees for a guy who was looking to have a house built. I threw on my hooks and started to free climb. It's what we called it. Just gaffs. A saddle and my rope clipped to my side. I had a flip line, but these trees were so huge around that the line would not reach all the around the log.
I got to the top of the tree, it was an old Oak, set my line and asked the ground pounder to tie my tools on the rope so that I may pull them up. He couldn't reach my rope. The end of my line was about 30 feet off the ground. So, I repelled down the tree until the first big break where the crown starts to spread.
The ground pounder tied the tools on at which point I had to free climb back up to the top of the tree, set my line once again and started to walk around the crown to drop the limbs. It was a great life, an adrenaline rush just about everyday day. I miss it, but bodies get old I suppose.
