Re skepticism over the headline unemployment rate:

Does anyone have a tally of Wall Street bonuses for 2011? A year ago this time, we knew the 2010 total was $144 billion.

A year later I still can't find a total for the last calendar year, only projections of a 20% YoY decline.

The last 2 UE reports were so absurd that it's hard not to believe they're a useful distraction from something fat in the pike, like a stock market crash (which will be blamed on Greece rather than the U.S. ponzimonium) or mega-bonuses (which will be justified based on the putatively improving labor market).

Just wondering...

Right on, john. Good find.

Still, the article ducks the ultimate question, i.e, what's the total bonus package payout. A curious omission given what we've learned in the post-TARP world, no?

The reticence of sociopaths troubles me.

I'll tell you a fucked up story.

Around 3 years ago, I got pissed off at my local and wandered into another bar. There was a cute bartender there, great ass (which I'd seen before) and wildly efficient (which I hadn't, not like this).

I started going in regular and we became chatty, and I'm digging her so I ask her out.

"I don't know," Stef says. "There's a lot a crazy rumors about you."

"Okay," I say, "like what?"

"Like you're a homosexual," she says.

I squint.

"I want you to assume that's true," I say. "Wouldn't that make you more inclined rather than less inclined to come over to my house and make you dinner, knowing I won't jump you bones? What rumor do you really wanna know about?"

"I hear you deal coke," she says.

"So as far as you know I'm a homosexual coke dealer?" I ask.

Stef nods, seriously. It's an opening.

"I tell you what," I say. "I promise that the only white powder you'll see in my place is flour, and you won't see gay porn on my TV. I'll also grill you the best cheeseburger you ever tasted. Deal?"

We've been dating for 3 years.

I'm not sure why I shared that. It's probably the jimsonweed.

Lawsuit Poses More Problems for Falcone

http://news.hedgefund.net/default.aspx?story=13356

[snip]

When you thought things couldn’t get worse for hedge fund manager Phil Falcone’s stake in wireless company LightSquared, it has.

Investors in Falcone’s hedge fund Harbinger Capital Partners have filed a lawsuit against the hedge fund manager and the firm claiming that his investment in LightSquared cost investors billions of dollars, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Falcone made a multi-billion dollar investment in LightSquared in hopes of building a 4G network but the proposal was turned down by the Federal Communications Commission, which claimed that the network would have a negative impact on the country’s satellite-based global positioning system.

MORE on LightSquared:

Exclusive: LightSquared plans to cut 45 percent of workforce

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/02/21/us-lightsquared-idUSTRE81K1XN20120221

[snip]

For Falcone, who made his fortune on a bet against subprime mortgages and once oversaw $26 billion, the battle for LightSquared is personal.

He has invested more than 60 percent of his $4 billion Harbinger Capital Partners' assets in LightSquared and his fund is the biggest equity owner. Last year Harbinger Capital Partners lost 47 percent of its value after Falcone marked down the value of LightSquared in the portfolio.

There is a video going around claiming that volcanic plumes are visible (satellite imagery) emanating from the New Madrid Fault.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=dEMR2BSgBwg

Before people get their skivvy britches tied up in a knot, the plumes seen are caused by the wind turbine albedo effect.

This also can can be seen in weather radar images too...

MAJOR SOLAR FLARE (UPDATED): Big sunspot AR1429 has unleashed another major flare. This one is the strongest yet, an X5-class eruption on March 7th at 00:28 UT. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme UV flash:

This eruption hurled a bright CME into space, shown here in a movie from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab estimate that the CME will reach Earth on March 8th at 0625 UT (+/- 7 hr), possibly triggering a strong-to-extreme geomagnetic storm. An animated forecast track shows the progression of the fast-moving cloud.

The flare also accelerated energetic protons toward Earth, triggering an S3-class solar radiation storm, in progress. Such a storm is mainly a nuisance to satellites, causing occasional reboots of onboard computers and adding noise to imaging systems.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM UPDATE: A CME propelled toward Earth by this morning's X5-class solar flare is expected to reach our planet on March 8th at 0625 UT (+/- 7 hr). Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab, who prepared the CME's forecast track, say the impact could spark a strong-to-severe geomagnetic storm. Sky watchers at all latitudes should be alert for auroras.

Here is an absolutely stunning video from NASA taken from the Internation Space Station flying above (and through) the aurora.
