Rep. Mel Watt, a Democrat from North Carolina, is being nominated Wednesday to lead the Federal Housing Finance Agency, and replace besieged acting director Edward DeMarco, in a move applauded by observers who say he will focus on ensuring that market reforms support working families.

However, critics were also quick to comment Wednesday.

“I could not be more disappointed in this nomination. This gives new meaning to the adage that the fox is guarding the hen house,” said Sen. Bob Corker, a Republican of Tennessee and member of the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee.
