I'M ON A BOAT!

PROFANITY WARNING

This is the clip that Elon Musk tweeted last night, and then later deleted, because the American people have never heard these words before. In case you missed it, SpaceX on their 5th attempt over the last year, successfully landed their reusable rocket on a drone boat in the ocean.

Below is 4k footage of the landing taken by the chase plane.

Here are a couple of photos.

Today’s landing took place on SpaceX’s drone ship named “Of Course I Still Love You,” a nod to ships in the late Iain Banks’ science fiction novels.

And some thoughts on the landing from Musk:

Definitely harder to land on a ship. Similar to an aircraft carrier vs land: much smaller target area, that's also translating & rotating.

As mentioned before, ship landings are needed for high velocity missions. Altitude & distance don't mean much for orbit. All about speed.

Musk said that before today’s launch, company members were placing the odds of success at 2:1. “We thought it was more likely than not that this mission would work, but still probably have a 1/3 chance of failure,” Musk said. “It’s still quite tricky to land on a ship…it’s quite a tiny target.”

“The rocket landed instead of putting a hole in the ship, or tipping over, so we’re really excited about that.”
