Thirty-two people were arrested Sunday night in Iowa while participating in an “Occupy” protest on public land, after police warned that the proper permits had not been issued. The Iowa State Patrol began arresting the peaceful demonstrators, including two juveniles, after 11 p.m. They gave protesters several warnings that they would be removed, but the 32 locked arms and determined to stay.
As they were arrested one-by-one, protesters chanted, “Whose park? Our park!”
The 32 were an off-shoot of about 200 protesters, who gathered across the street from the capitol grounds and chanted “Don’t arrest them!” at police, according to The Des Moines Register. One man was even pepper-sprayed after being placed in handcuffs, according to a post on the Occupy Iowa Facebook page. Police also scuffled with a man over a camera that was used to photograph the scene, they said.
