Feb. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Senate Democrats are pushing for approval soon of a job-creation bill that includes a payroll-tax holiday for companies that hire unemployed workers.

The plan announced today by Senate Majority Leader Leader Harry Reid would will give small businesses more power to write off investment costs, extend the Build America Bonds program that subsidizes interest payments on local government bonds and continue the federal highway construction program through year’s end.

“We have to let the American people know we’re really trying hard to get something done that will create jobs immediately,” Reid, a Nevada Democrat, said on the Senate floor. He told reporters the plan had “some good” bipartisan support.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, said his members still needed details of the proposal to spend at least $80 billion so they can “understand what they’re being called on to support.”

Late in the day Democratic lawmakers said they were still negotiating the measure’s provisions before formally introducing it.

Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Prime Minister George Papandreou’s drive to get Greece’s ballooning budget under control will be challenged in the streets today as striking labor unions shut down schools, hospitals and flights.

Air-traffic controllers and civil-aviation workers are effectively closing down Greek air space as part of the 24-hour work stoppage by ADEDY, the umbrella group representing about 600,000 civil servants. Some 483 international and domestic flights have been cancelled, a spokeswoman for Athens International Airport, Greece’s biggest, said by phone.
